Bed Bug Avoidance while Traveling
How to prevent an infestation
Bed bugs are notoriously sneaky, hard-to-get-rid-of insects that cause a major hassle once they’ve infested your home. Most instances of bed bugs occur after traveling, when the bugs hitch a ride on your luggage or clothing. Here’s what you need to know about bed bug avoidance on your next trip.
Bed Bug Avoidance Tips
- Inspect your luggage. The only way to make sure you aren’t bringing home hitchhiking bed bugs is to inspect every inch of every piece of luggage. Remember, bed bugs are tiny and often translucent, so be extra vigilant. Look especially closely at corners, folds, seams, crevices and other hard-to-see spots. If you spot signs of bugs, it’s time to call a pest professional immediately to deal with an infestation.
- Wash your fabrics in the machine. Before you return home, wash all your clothes. When you launder your clothes, use the highest possible temperature to kill any living bugs or unhatched eggs. Then place them in a dryer for a couple of cycles. Set the dryer to the hottest possible temperature, as well. Place your laundered items in black plastic trash bags to prevent bugs from escaping. Finally, place the trash bags into your suitcase to take home.
- Hand-wash other items. Plastic, hard-case suitcases can be hand washed with hot soapy water. Try to get the water as hot as you can when scrubbing. Use a brush or sponge along corners, nooks, and crannies to ensure you get every inch.
- Some items can’t be washed. These instances call for you to either freeze or heat the item. Freeze items for five days at at least 23F and expose items to hot temperatures of 120F for about two hours to kill any remaining bed bugs or eggs.
