Bed Bug Treatment Tips
How to treat for bed bugs yourself
Bed bugs are a dreaded parasitic pest that feeds on the blood of its host, most commonly while they sleep in their bed (hence their name). Recognizable by their flat, oval-shaped bodies and brown to reddish-brown color, bed bugs are notoriously difficult to get rid of once they’ve made their way into your home. While professional pest control is your best bed in eradicating an infestation, there are some things you can do yourself. Read on to learn a few bed bug treatment ideas that you can implement yourself.
Bed Bug Treatment Tips
- Use heat. Exposing bed linens to heat has been proven to kill bed bugs. Take this route if you suspect that you have a bed bug problem or that you’ve been exposed to bed bugs. Toss your contaminated things into a dryer for half an hour on the highest setting to kill the nasty bugs. Steam also kills bed bugs. Buy a steamer designed to kill bed bugs and bed bug eggs and use it on mattresses, box springs, and upholstered furniture.
- Insecticide. First, it’s important to treat your mattress, bed, and box spring. Use an aerosol can made specifically for bed bugs and apply it to the mattress. Bed bugs are good at hiding, so be sure to pay special attention to folds, seams, tufts, and buttons. Then treat the rest of the room. Mix water with an insecticide labeled for use against bed bugs in affected rooms and the other rooms sharing walls with it. Apply the mixture with a spray bottle, focusing on the bed legs, furniture legs, electrical outlets, windowsills, door frames, carpets, and baseboards. Reapply these insecticides every week to ensure that you’ve killed all the bed bugs and their eggs.
