What Do Bed Bugs Eat?

The ugly truth about these nasty pests

Bed bugs are universally reviled because of the itchy welts their bites leave behind on their warm-blooded hosts. These pesky parasites are notoriously hard to control, and often require professional intervention. Here’s more about what bed bugs eat.

What

Bed bugs have one (and only one) source of food: blood. And spilled, old blood won’t do; it must be extracted directly from their warm-blooded host. To do this, they inject an anti-coagulant chemical into the host’s skin to prevent their blood from clotting. This allows them to feed until their needs are met.

Who

Bed bugs require the carbon dioxide in fresh blood of mammals to survive. They get this through humans, or other household pets, in a pinch. When choosing their victims, bed bugs take blood chemistry, carbon dioxide levels, nutrition, and temperature into consideration. If no warm-blooded host is available, bed bugs can last a couple months without feeding, or they’ll turn to cold-blooded animals as a last resort.

When

You’ve heard the saying about this nocturnal nuisance, “sleep tight, don’t let the bed bugs bite.” Bed bugs are most active at night because their feeding process is not felt by humans (especially when they’re sleeping), so the bugs have fewer chances of being disrupted as they eat.

Why

Both nymph and adult bed bugs need blood to move to the next stage of their life cycle. At least one meal of blood is needed for a bed bug to molt and continue to the next stage of life.
