The Hidden Dangers of a Mouse Infestation
How mice can create hazardous conditions in a home
A mouse in the house is cause for major concern. Not only does the sight of one startle and surprise us, but the unfortunate reality is that when there’s one mouse present, there are sure to be more lurking behind the scenes. When temperatures cool, mice tend to seek out warmth, shelter, and a source of food and water. This usually means your home or business. We all know the signs of mice, usually droppings scattered around the kitchen, but did you know that this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the damage they cause? Read on to learn more about why a mouse infestation is more dangerous than you might have thought.
- Mice spread disease. Those harmless-looking droppings can carry a number of diseases. So can their urine (which is excreted in such small doses it’s invisible to the naked eye) and their dander. The diseases mice are known to spread include salmonella, murine typhus, infectious jaundice, leptospirosis, plague, and many others.
- Mice are often hosts to ticks and fleas. Deer ticks, contrary to their name, usually choose mice to feed on. This makes people near a mouse infestation more vulnerable to Lyme disease. Fleas also like to feed on mouse blood, which can spread murine typhus.
- Many people are allergic to mice. Rodent feces and urine spread airborne allergens that contribute to (or cause) allergic reactions and severe respiratory issues, like asthma.
- Mice can cause damage to a structure. Rodents have incisor teeth that grow constantly, meaning they must consistently gnaw, chew, and bite to file them down. Unfortunately, mice often choose items in your home when looking to chew on something. This can include insulation, moulding, and even electrical wiring. The wiring is particularly dangerous, because exposed wires can cause an electrical short and cause a fire.
