Tips for Controlling Mosquitoes
How to stay mosquito-free this summer
Next to a rainstorm, a swarm of mosquitoes is the fastest way to break up a fun outdoor BBQ. These flying pests feed on human blood, potentially spreading disease with each bite. While mosquitoes can’t be completely eradicated, there are ways to somewhat control their population. Here are some tips for effectively controlling mosquitoes.
Remove Standing Water
Stagnant, still water is a popular breeding ground for mosquitoes. After a rainfall, be sure to empty the water in kiddie pools, buckets, empty flowerpots, and other places that collect rainwater. Additionally, keep your gutters clean and look around for places in your lawn with poor drainage, then fill them in with soil to prevent puddling. If you have small pools, bird baths, or fountains you don’t want to chlorinate, be sure to change the water every week.
Keep Outdoor Fans
Mosquitoes are attracted to the scent of human bodies. Because they are weak flyers, a few strategically placed fans help keep them away from certain areas of your yard helps keep them away.
Use a Repellant
Protect yourself when you’re outside by applying insect repellant to your skin to mask your scent. The repellant you use should contain the chemical DEET. Reapply every few hours to prevent bites.
Though it should not be used directly on the skin, permethrin is another effective repellent ingredient. It can be applied to clothing, either by spray or as an additive to laundry detergent.
Wear the Right Clothing
Mosquitoes are attracted to darker clothing, so wearing light-colored clothing makes you less noticeable to them. Protecting your skin with clothing is another way to prevent bites. Long pants, long sleeves, socks, and shoes are effective in keeping mosquitoes off of you.
